As a jeweller and painter Natalie uses a variety of media to create colourful pieces that explore ideas associated with displacement, natural order and the often idiosyncratic way that things and creatures cohabit and survive. Taking inspiration from shrubs that sprout from cracks in walls, the front garden as a window onto human personality, layers of colour and light and the interplay of materials, Natalie creates vibrant and personal jewellery that celebrates the vitality and diversity of the world through her eyes.
Using a a broad palette of materials such as hand dyed and textured plastic, precious metals, found objects, felt and paint encourages expressive, 3-Dimensional interpretations of thoughts and ideas gathered from sketches and writing. We are asked to question what category the pieces fall into jewellery, art object, 3-Dimensional drawing?
A necklace that lives inside a bottle is a piece of jewellery when worn on the body and small, sculptural object in the home. The necklaces conjure up images of bottle gardens, genies, a message in a bottle. It is self-contained and hidden in the bottle but emerges to display its full colour, length and complexity when pulled out to be worn. It has connotations of birds and plants displaying colour to attract and also of our own introvert and extrovert personalities.
